Research plan for the Postgraduate school
How to write a Research plan(Very important!!)
- Research topic( too complicated nor too abstract is recommended. It’s all about how specific and precise you can write. ) Postgraduate school is not a place where you study technical knowledge. It is a place where you can utilize the knowledge that you have learnt in University for doing more researches. Creative mindset is crucial.
- Academic topic Choose a professor with a similar topic and do your own research. If your topic is just simply copied from books or Internet, you may not be able to answer the questions during interview.
- Write your own opinions Separate your own view from the others. Plagiarizing is forbidden.
- Studying under teachers’ specialty Specialized fields are subdivided.
Things to prepare before coming to Japan。
☆Various preparations and taking the JLPT test outside Japan is recommended. It is a must to take TOEFL or TOEIC tests in your own country. Students’ future choices will be limited if you are not capable to use basic English language skills. Using dictionary is recommended.Students who will be taking University exams:
- Revise the basic courses before coming to Japan(English ・Math・Chemistry・Physics・Biology・World History・Geography), because it will benefit you and also save time and energy. All in all, you can concentrate more on learning Japanese.
Postgraduate ・Research students:
- English(take TOEIC・TOEFL tests before coming to Japan) Warning:Even though your English is poor, please try to undertake the test as there is no minimum requirement。
- Technical knowledge(Bring at least 2 technical books in your own language)
- Summary of your graduation thesis
- Research plan As you might be limited by the Japanese language skills, you may not be able to read a large piles of specialized books once you are in Japan, so it is advised to try and write it in your own language at first. And translate it into Japanese when it is necessary.

Student interview
Keio Postgraduate school Passed ms.ching chong呉聰聰さん
- What is the name of the Postgraduate school that you have passed?
- I passed Keio Department of Political Science, Graduate School of Law.
- What do you think is the most important thing to enter a Japanese school?
- I think the most important things are Japanese, English, specialized knowledge and a research plan.
- What was the most difficult thing for you to enter the next level of education?
- For me the whole preparation phase was hard. I changed my research topic a lot. That is why I learned a lot more about Japanese language education, Intercultural education, Sociology and other expertises. I think that these learnings have resulted in accumulating knowledge in different fields. In the process of preparing the research plan, I was indebted to various people. I have received many valuable advices from my Japanese language school teachers。I also think that to write the research plan you will need advices and opinions from others, not just your own. I really appreciate those who cooperated and lent a hand to me.
- Is there anything you want to say to all the juniors who are planning to study abroad?
- To those thinking about studying abroad, if you have acquired the JLPT N1 and a certain level of English skills ahead before coming to Japan, everything will be much smoother and easier for you. Also, I am still regretting for not taking the first 2015 EJU exam, waiting for my result all alone was tough for me when all of my friends and classmates were celebrating their passing their tests, so I would strongly recommend you start researching and preparing for your next school as early as possible. If not, you may lose ocean of chances.
